Case Report Immune Mediated Hemolysis in Visceral Leishmaniasis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an intracellular parasitic infection that infects and multiplies in the macrophages of the liver, spleen and bone marrow. It is characterized by intermittent fever, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia and hypergammaglobulinemia. Anemia of multifactorial etiology is a usual manifestation of VL; however, Coombs positive hemolytic anemia has been infrequently reported in cases of VL [1–5]. In this brief communication, we report occurrence of immune hemolytic anemia in a young child with VL. She was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin.

Immune Hemolytic Anemia in Association with Visceral Leishmaniasis
11 Summary Despite the fact that anemia is one of the most striking clinical features of visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar), the factors involved in the pathogenesis are not fully understood. The cause of anemia seen in these patients is often multifactorial including sequestration and destruction of the erythrocytes in the enlarged spleen, hemophagocytosis and alterations in erythrocyte membra...

The potential of PLGA-nanoparticles as a carrier of amphotericin B and doxorubicin against visceral leishmaniasis was evaluated by macrophage-mediated drug targeting approach. PLGA-nanoparticles were modified by coating them with macrophage-specific ligand-lectin. Prior to in-vitro studies, characterization studies were carried out systematically include particle size, surface morphology, perce...
متن کاملCase Report An unusual presentation of leishmaniasis in a human immunodeficiency virus-positive individual
Introduction: Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by vector-borne protozoa of the genus Leishmania. Cutaneous and mucocutaneous forms result in disfiguration or mutilation, whilst visceral leishmaniasis (VL) affects multiple organs and is fatal if untreated. Notably, Leishmania are capable of establishing a chronic infection, which may reactivate years after initial infection w...
متن کاملDisseminated cutaneous Leishmaniasis on lymphedema following radiotherapy: A case report
Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a parasitic disease, which is hyperendemic in Isfahan, usually caused by L.major and L.tropica. Herein we report a patient with post-mastectomy lymphedema on right upper limb accompanying with the lesions of cutaneous leishmaniasis on the right and left forearms. Following radiotherapy, the lesions on the limb with lymphedema were disseminated. But the lesions on...
متن کاملSialoglycosylation of RBC in Visceral Leishmaniasis Leads to Enhanced Oxidative Stress, Calpain-Induced Fragmentation of Spectrin and Hemolysis
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by the intracellular parasite Leishmania donovani accounts for an estimated 12 million cases of human infection. It is almost always associated with anemia, which severely complicates the disease course. However, the pathological processes leading to anemia in VL have thus far not been adequately characterized to date. In studying the glycosylation patterns of...
